To Be a Martial Artist

You must practice everyday
In your heart, or mind, or spirit
You will always find a way
As a martial artist
You must always soar above
And when thunderous storms threaten
Defend with courageous love
To live as a martial artist
You should take a mindful breath
And seek a mindful life
And not worry about the rest
To share your martial thoughts
Is the most difficult of tasks
There’s always someone’s criticism
And judgment never lacks
The beauty of it all
Is that you have reached your goal
Not a belt, or sash, or status
But to become completely whole
You are a martial artist
In everything you do
To be a martial artist
Is to be a better you

  1. Andrea, you are so inspiring and it applies to everyday situations. If you just close your eyes and take a deep breath like you have said previously, that is just the beginning. Your writing is so outstanding and I can’t wait for your book to come out. You have such an inner peace just like we try to teach with our prayer. You are reaching people in such a fantastic way. Keep going so we can all be touched by your wonderful works. Marlene Yonko

  2. That is very poetic! I love the way you organized it into poem form. Living the life of a martial artist is an interesting one. That’s because martial artists, like yourself, are leaders. And the life of a leader is hard. Leaders(should)always hold themselves to a higher standard. The training of a martial artist allows her to handle the storms of life more efficiently, because the martial arts are a “way of life”. To quote a great person, “Life is a storm…You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a leader is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout, do your worst, for I will do mine!” And to confront the storm is to Win at Life! πŸ™‚

  3. Beautiful! I started martial arts not to learn self defense or to get in better shape. I did it because I was going down a bad road and needed a change in my life. Fast forward a few years, and I am a changed woman. I am confident, happy, and comfortable with who I am. I have never been happier in my life.
